Description
The year is 2036. In this famine-riddled world, food-centric sovereignty has been established. Living alone inside a food-inspection booth, you are striving to find truth and peace beyond the borderline.
History
Booth: A Dystopian Adventure is a food-inspection and life-sim adventure game set in a dystopian retro-future. The major inspiration came from Lucas Pope's Papers, Please, Ace Attorney Trilogy, George Orwell's 1984 and the Wachowskis' The Matrix.
This project began as my first attempt to make games after learning how to use GameMaker Studio in early 2017, during which time I was still a master student studying in Tokyo. I intended to make a small game but the scale of it eventually grew out of my control.
In 2018, while I was still not sure if I could ever finish or release it, I got accepted by the 6th BitSummit (an annual indie game convention in Kyoto), after which Humble Bundle reached out and offered me a deal of Humble Original. This became the biggest motivation for me to push through the development.
In early 2019, my high school friend Rundong Hu joined in as the music composer, and I graduated and started working as a programmer at a Japanese company.
After one year of hard work alongside a day job and 3 years of development in total, I finally finished and self-published it in July 2020.
